What is constipation?

When an individual passes less than three bowel movements every week or has difficult bowel movements then it'll be considered as a constipation. However, how often you “go” varies widely from person to person. Some people have bowel movements several times each day while others have them just one to 2 times every week. Whatever your movement pattern is, it’s unique and normal for you — as long as you don’t stray too far away from your pattern. Regardless of your bowel pattern, one fact is a certain: the longer you go before you “go,” the harder it becomes for stool to pass.

Other key features that sometimes define constipation include: Your stools are dry, and hard. Your movement is painful and stools are difficult to pass. You have a sense that you simply haven't fully emptied your bowels.

How does constipation happen?

Constipation happens because your colon absorbs an excessive amount of water from waste (stool), which dries out the stool making it hard in consistency and difficult to obtrude of the body. To back up a bit, as food normally moves through the alimentary canal, nutrients are absorbed. The partially digested food (waste) that is still moves from the tiny intestine to the massive intestine, also called the colon. The colon absorbs water from this waste, which creates a solid matter called stool. If you've got constipation, food may move too slowly through the alimentary canal. This provides the colon longer — an excessive amount of time – to soak up water from the waste. The stool becomes dry, hard, and difficult to obtrude .
