Warts A small, fleshy bump on the skin or mucosa caused by human papillomavirus. Warts are caused by various strains of human papillomaviruses. Different strains may cause warts in several parts of the body. Warts are often spread from one location on the body to a different or from person to person by contact with the wart. Because each person's system responds differently to the virus, not everyone who comes in touch with HPV will get a wart.
